Dashboard on ios devices

I did not see much in the knowledge base or posts on this … I guess most are using Android? I finally found a away to make my dashboard behave on my iPad like it did on ActionTiles. After launching the dashboard via Safari, I click on the “….” button, select “Full Screen” then use the 3-tap on the iPad menu button to enter iOS “guided access”. This allows all the buttons to function while not allowing editing of the dashboard. The security PIN feature in SharpTools did not provide this functionality. Am I missing something? (BTW, I used to have an Android tablet with Fully Kiosk. It died, so I repurposed an old iPad. It works much better)

The Add to Homescreen approach along with enabling Guided Access is a common approach on iPads.

There’s also some discussion about iPad Kiosk apps and the Add to Homescreen + Guided Access approach here:

thanks … I’ll take a look at Kiosker. You may want to add to the help document “Add SharpTools to Home Screen (iOS & Android” that it can be locked in iOS by switching to full screen (to prevent editing of the dashboard) and then enabling “guided access”.

Done! It was included in a note in the Fully Kiosk Browser article, which itself is linked at the bottom of the Add to Homescreen article, but I added a blue callout about it directly in the iOS section of the article.

A post was split to a new topic: Socket disconnected on iPad Mini shortcut

interesting behavior I have noticed: if you launch dashbord from a home page shortcut, then go to full screen and then enable guided access, the edit function on the dashboard is NOT available However, if you open Safari, open SharpTools, then the dashboard, then go to full screen and then enable guided access, the edit function on the dashboard IS available

Interesting find. I’m not able to reproduce that behavior though? If you are using the same full screen approach within SharpTools, it should be the same in either case. Feel free to record a video and share on YouTube / Google Drive / iCloud if you have a specific approach to accomplish what you’re referring to though.

Dashboard vs Kiosk Start URL

Keep in mind that if you start Guided Access while in Safari, you’re basically making the whole browser available, so someone could navigate back and forth and exit out of the fullscreen mode which would make the edit button available.

The same concept applies for the Add to Homescreen approach. As noted in the linked article, most people will want to navigate to the list of dashboards, then tap the ... next to their desired dashboard and tap View (Kiosk) before using the Share > Add to Homescreen option.

This ensures that the shortcut on your homescreen takes you directly into the Dashboard loaded in Kiosk mode so you can’t swipe to navigate back and exit out of kiosk mode.

Kiosk App Alternative

Alternatively, some people prefer using a Kiosk App as it feels more intuitive and explicit for them.

See videos for launching using a short cut and then for using the dashboard. Note when using that the normal navigation and edit icons are missing
