So I have been using the styles option for custom icons and it works great. How could I do the same things, but with a custom tile background vs just the icon? I can see how to make solid icon colors, but not change the entire tile like you can do wiht media tiles.

Hi my friend. One way is if you set a dashboard background that simulates each tile, and tile with transparent background. Hope this helps !
